Your password and login credentials are simply a means to an end, a key that unlocks the house to your personal data. Time to Celebrate! TeamPassword Reaches 2.5 Million Shared Logins!

Last year, we reached a milestone that we could barely wrap our minds around — 1,000,000 shared logins on TeamPassword . Today, we’re in shock to have more than doubled that milestone by reaching 2.5 million shared logins!

This past July, we released the<a href="https://www.jungledisk.com/blog/2019/07/25/teampassword-increases-user-productivity-with-new-mobile-application/">&nbsp;first-ever mobile app for TeamPassword customers</a>. After working for almost a year to design and develop this app, we have many lessons learned and want to share a bit of how we worked to make TeamPassword Mobile a useful, easy-to-navigate app for our users.
As we designed this app, we used many different UX research methods to stay aware of our users&rsquo; needs and evaluate the effectiveness of our designs. For this initial release, it was very important to make a good first impression, and show our customers how much we value their experience. We also wanted to lay a strong design foundation, to support us as we grow and build out our roadmap of new features.
One of the research methods we used is called a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usability.gov/how-to-and-tools/methods/first-click-testing.html">First Click Test</a>. This method is great for small, agile teams who need to work fast, but still want to follow a design thinking process and continuously evaluate and iterate their designs. This is a particularly useful method for evaluating navigation, as research has shown that:
<ul>
<li>&ldquo;A participant who clicks down the right path on the first click will complete their task successfully 87% of the time.</li>
<li>A participant who clicks down the wrong-path on the first click, tends to only successfully complete their task 46% of the time.&rdquo; -&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usability.gov/how-to-and-tools/methods/first-click-testing.html">Usability.gov</a></li>
</ul>
In a First-Click Test, participants are presented with a single screen, functional or prototype, and given a prompt asking them where they would click (or in our case, tap) to perform a certain task.
We had learned from usability tests that a particular place in our design was confusing users. The screen to view a login had a white, rounded box containing the username and password, and our test participants frequently attempted to tap this box to edit the password. In hindsight, this design clearly implied that the box was a form field... because it looks just like a form field. But this is the beauty of usability tests &mdash; when you are working fast and your team is small, it is easy to miss what may seem obvious. When you put your designs in front of real users, you save yourself the time and investment of having to go back and fix these forehead-smacking issues later!

We iterated the design of this screen in an attempt to fix this problem, and came up with what we believed to be a major improvement. However, we didn&rsquo;t want to make the mistake of assuming our design would solve the problem. Before we did any development work, we did a First Click Test to validate it.
There are a lot of tools out there to conduct a First Click Test remotely, many that offer a panel of users you can easily recruit from using demographic filters and screener questions. We used a service called&nbsp;<a href="https://usabilityhub.com/">UsabilityHub</a>.
For our test, we simply conducted two versions: one with the current screen and one with the new design, and asked, &ldquo;Where would you click to edit the password?&rdquo; We had a total of 50 participants respond, 25 for each version, and we were able to get results within a couple of hours.

This told us that the interaction was not only more clear, but much more intuitive, requiring less cognitive effort to figure out.
At this point, we were able to confidently move forward with development knowing the new design would be an improved experience for our users.

Security breaches have become alarmingly common &mdash; both at home and in the workplace. The Ponemon Institute, a leading provider of independent research on data protection and emerging technologies, recently released its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.yubico.com/authentication-report/">2019 State of Password and Authentication Security Behaviors Report</a>. The survey of 1,761 IT and IT security practitioners around the world provides a lot of insight into privacy and security concerns, including password management, authentication strategies and cybersecurity costs.
Let&rsquo;s take a look at some of the key insights from the report and some best practices to help address them.
<h2 id="phishing-attacks-are-common">Phishing Attacks are Common</h2>
<a href="https://www.jungledisk.com/blog/2019/05/20/is-it-a-phishing-email-or-a-real-email-heres-how-to-tell/">Phishing attacks</a>&nbsp;have become the most popular form of cyberattack against many homes and businesses. According to Ponemon, more than half of respondents (51 percent) said that they have experienced a phishing attack. A separate survey from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/average-cost-of-a-spear-phishing/">Cloudmark</a>&nbsp;found that phishing attacks were responsible for 38 percent of all cyberattacks on respondent companies and the average cost following an attack was upwards of $1.8 million.
Surprisingly, 57 percent of those that experienced a phishing attack didn&rsquo;t change&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jungledisk.com/blog/2019/06/10/your-passwords-arent-safe-unless-youre-taking-these-5-steps/">the way that they manage their passwords</a>. There&rsquo;s a good chance that many of these incidents also go unreported in the workplace. It&rsquo;s important to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jungledisk.com/blog/2019/04/29/how-to-train-employees-on-cybersecurity/">train employees</a>&nbsp;on how to recognize phishing attacks and encourage them to report any attacks to the proper IT personnel. These efforts can help inform training exercises and proactively address risks.

<h2 id="what-s-the-best-way-to-make-a-password">What&rsquo;s the best way to make a password?</h2>
The best way to make a password is to randomly generate it and save it into your favorite password manager. The reason this is a good idea is because your passwords are constantly at risk of getting leaked by the company you trust to protect them, so if the password you used for Yahoo in 2013 was the same password you used for your email or your bank, you&rsquo;d be in pretty big trouble!
<h2 id="unique-complicated-and-randomized-passwords-are-best-">Unique, complicated and randomized passwords are best.</h2>
Next to using a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.teampassword.com/?utm_source=jungledisk&amp;utm_medium=blog_post">password manager</a>, the next thing I&rsquo;d recommend is using some sort of pattern for the service you&rsquo;re using. For example, you could create a pattern like [website name][special character][first name][numbers].
So, if your name is Mary and you want to create a Twitter password, you could create a password like &ldquo;Twitter$$$Mary9987,&rdquo; and if you wanted a password for Facebook it&rsquo;d be &ldquo;Facebook$$$Mary9987.&rdquo; This is way worse than using a randomized password, but, it&rsquo;s way better than just reusing a weak password like &ldquo;rover123&rdquo; on every service.
Finally, length is really important for security, the longer a password is the harder it would be for someone to either guess or derive from some fancy math, so adding a long random selection of letters and/or numbers to your password can help, something like &ldquo;nmjkioNMJKIO,&rdquo; which is just a collection of upper and lowercase characters in a pattern up that section of your keyboard, but adds an extra 12 characters to your length, which isn&rsquo;t bad for something that&rsquo;s easy to remember and fast to type.
Ultimately, a randomized password generated from a manager like&nbsp;<a href="https://www.teampassword.com/?utm_source=jungledisk&amp;utm_medium=blog_post">TeamPassword&nbsp;</a>is the best option to keep your passwords secure.
