Chapter 12 of 14

Guest networks & IoT

Use a second SSID to keep visitors and smart devices off your LAN.

Most modern routers let you broadcast a second SSID. Use it. The 'main' network should hold laptops and servers; a separate guest network keeps visitors and untrusted IoT (smart TVs, printers, cameras) isolated. A breach of a smart bulb shouldn't reach your file server.

Separate SSIDs

One for staff, one for guests, optionally one for IoT.

Client isolation on

Guest devices shouldn't see each other or the LAN.

Different password per SSID

Generate each independently — never share keys across networks.
