How this password strength checker works

As you type, the checker estimates your password's entropy — a measure of randomness in bits — from its length and the mix of character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols). It then converts that into an estimated time to crack by brute force. The longer and more varied your password, the higher the entropy and the longer it would take an attacker to guess.

Brute force alone flatters predictable passwords, so the checker also looks for patterns a real attacker would exploit first: common base words, keyboard sequences such as qwerty or 12345, repeated characters, and the mangling rules cracking tools apply to every dictionary word — capitalising the first letter, substituting @ for a or 0 for o, and tacking numbers or symbols on the end. That's why P@ssw0rd123! scores far worse than its length and character mix suggest.

How is password strength measured?
We estimate entropy — a measure of randomness in bits — from the length and mix of character types, then translate it into an estimated time to crack. We also check for guessable patterns: common base words, keyboard runs like qwerty, repeats, and the standard mangling rules attackers apply (capitalising the first letter, swapping a for @, adding numbers on the end). When a pattern is found, we report the cheaper of the two estimates, because that is the route an attacker would take.
Why is “P@ssw0rd123!” rated weak when it looks complex?
Because it is still the word password. Cracking tools run dictionaries of common passwords through mangling rules — capitalisation, character substitutions, appended digits and symbols — so a decorated dictionary word falls in seconds. A short random password is far stronger than a long predictable one.
What is a good password strength?
Aim for a password that would take centuries to crack — generally 16+ characters mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Length is the single biggest factor.
