The free plan's binding constraint is not storage. You get unlimited items, but only one active session at a time, so signing in on a laptop logs you out on your phone. The product itself is capable. The security record is the problem, and it is worth stating in full rather than in a footnote:
- 2022: attackers exfiltrated backup servers containing encrypted vaults along with some unencrypted metadata. Researchers have since traced tens of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency theft to seed phrases stored in those vaults, with losses still accruing years later.
- 2025: LastPass agreed a $24.5 million class-action settlement.
- November 2025: the UK Information Commissioner's Office fined LastPass UK Ltd £1,228,283 under the UK GDPR, affecting up to 1.6 million UK users.
- June 2026: a supply-chain breach at a third-party vendor exposed LastPass customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses and support case contents through its CRM. Vaults and master passwords were not affected, but disclosure came ten days after discovery.
