VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A technology that encrypts internet traffic and masks IP addresses by routing connections through a secure server, protecting data on public networks.
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server, protecting your internet traffic from interception. All data passing through the tunnel is encrypted, preventing eavesdroppers on public WiFi or compromised networks from reading your communications.
VPNs also mask your IP address, making it harder to track your online activity or determine your location. Enterprise VPNs provide secure remote access to internal company resources.
For teams, a VPN protects credential transmission when working from cafes, airports, or other public networks. However, a VPN doesn’t replace a password manager: it protects data in transit, while a password manager protects credentials at rest and ensures they’re strong and unique.
