Master Password
The single password used to unlock a password manager vault. It is never sent to servers and is the only credential a user must remember.
A master password is the single credential that unlocks a password manager’s encrypted vault. It’s the keystone of password management security: everything else depends on its strength and secrecy.
A strong master password should be long (16+ characters), unique (never used elsewhere), and memorable (a passphrase of random words works well). It is never transmitted to the password manager’s servers; instead, a key is derived from it locally to decrypt the vault.
If a master password is forgotten, recovery options are limited by design: in a zero-knowledge system, even the service provider cannot reset it. This is why some password managers offer recovery keys or emergency access features. Teams should establish clear procedures for master password management and recovery.
