RBAC (Role-Based Access Control)
A method of restricting system access based on users' roles within an organization, ensuring people can only access data relevant to their responsibilities.
Role-Based Access Control assigns permissions based on organizational roles rather than individual users. Instead of granting access user by user, administrators define roles (Admin, Manager, Developer, Viewer) and assign permissions to each role. Users are then assigned to roles.
RBAC simplifies access management at scale: when a new developer joins, they receive the Developer role and automatically get all associated permissions. When roles change, permissions update accordingly.
Team password managers implement RBAC through groups and folders. Administrators can create credential groups (Marketing Tools, Development APIs, Finance Accounts) and assign team members based on their role. This ensures each person has access only to the credentials they need.
