Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP)

A security concept where users and systems are given only the minimum access rights needed to perform their job, reducing the attack surface for breaches.

The Principle of Least Privilege states that every user, application, and system component should have only the minimum permissions necessary to perform its function: nothing more. This limits the damage that can result from accidents, errors, or malicious actions.

Implementing PoLP requires careful role definition, regular access reviews, and tools that support granular permissions. In practice, this means not giving every team member admin access, creating separate accounts for administrative tasks, and regularly auditing who has access to what.

Team password managers support PoLP by allowing administrators to share only specific credential groups with each team member. Instead of sharing the entire vault, each person sees only the credentials relevant to their role.
