Penetration testing (pen testing) is an authorized simulated attack on a system, network, or application to identify security vulnerabilities. Pen testers use the same tools and techniques as real attackers but within a defined scope and with permission.
Pen tests can be black-box (tester has no prior knowledge), white-box (full access to source code and architecture), or gray-box (partial knowledge). Results include a report of vulnerabilities found, their severity, and recommended remediations.
