IP Whitelisting
A security practice that allows access to a system only from pre-approved IP addresses, blocking all other connection attempts.
IP whitelisting restricts access to a system, application, or API to a predefined list of trusted IP addresses. Any connection attempt from an unlisted IP is automatically denied, regardless of whether the requester has valid credentials.
This adds a strong layer of defense: even if credentials are compromised, an attacker cannot use them unless they’re connecting from an approved IP. It’s commonly used for admin panels, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure management consoles.
However, IP whitelisting can be challenging for remote teams with dynamic IPs. Combining it with VPN access (where the VPN server’s IP is whitelisted) provides both flexibility and security.
