Intrusion Detection System (IDS)
A system that monitors network traffic or system activity for suspicious behavior and policy violations, alerting administrators to potential security incidents.
An Intrusion Detection System monitors network traffic or host activity for signs of malicious behavior, policy violations, or anomalies. IDS systems are categorized as network-based (NIDS), which monitor network traffic, or host-based (HIDS), which monitor individual systems.
IDS detection methods include signature-based (matching known attack patterns), anomaly-based (detecting deviations from normal behavior), and stateful protocol analysis. When suspicious activity is detected, the IDS generates alerts for security teams.
Unlike an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), a standard IDS only monitors and alerts: it doesn’t block traffic. For teams, IDS can detect credential-related threats like brute force attempts, unusual login patterns, or lateral movement using compromised credentials.
