Insider Threat

A security risk that originates from within an organization (such as a current or former employee, contractor, or partner) who misuses authorized access.

Insider threats come from individuals who have legitimate access to an organization’s systems and data. They can be malicious (a disgruntled employee stealing data) or negligent (an employee accidentally exposing credentials). Insiders are particularly dangerous because they bypass perimeter defenses.

Mitigating insider threats requires a combination of technical controls (least-privilege access, monitoring, DLP) and organizational measures (background checks, security training, clear offboarding procedures).

Password management plays a critical role: when credentials are shared through a managed vault with access controls and activity logging, it’s much harder for an insider to silently exfiltrate passwords. Immediate access revocation during offboarding closes the window of opportunity.
