A firewall is a fundamental network security tool that filters traffic between networks based on a set of rules. Firewalls can be hardware devices, software applications, or cloud-based services. They examine packets and either allow, block, or log traffic based on source/destination IP, port, protocol, and other criteria.
Modern next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) go beyond simple packet filtering to include deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, application awareness, and threat intelligence integration.
