FIDO2
An open authentication standard that enables passwordless login using hardware security keys or platform authenticators like fingerprint sensors and facial recognition.
FIDO2 is an open authentication standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the W3C. It consists of two components: WebAuthn (the browser API) and CTAP (Client to Authenticator Protocol, for communicating with external authenticators like security keys).
FIDO2 enables passwordless, phishing-resistant authentication. Credentials are cryptographically bound to the specific website, making them useless on phishing sites. Authentication happens locally on the device (via biometrics, PIN, or security key), and only a cryptographic proof is sent to the server: never a shared secret.
FIDO2 is the foundation of passkeys and represents the industry’s move toward eliminating passwords. However, during the transition period, teams still need password managers for the many services that haven’t adopted FIDO2.
