Data Breach
An incident in which sensitive, protected, or confidential data is accessed, disclosed, or stolen without authorization, often leading to credential exposure.
A data breach occurs when an unauthorized party gains access to sensitive data, including usernames, passwords, financial records, personal information, or intellectual property. Breaches can result from external attacks (hacking, phishing), insider threats, or accidental exposure (misconfigured databases).
The consequences are severe: regulatory fines, reputational damage, legal liability, and the direct cost of incident response. For credential-related breaches, the cascading effect is particularly dangerous: compromised passwords are used in credential stuffing attacks against other services.
Teams can reduce breach risk by eliminating password reuse, enforcing MFA, limiting access through least-privilege principles, and using a password manager with activity logging to detect anomalies.
