A network of compromised computers ("bots" or "zombies") controlled remotely by an attacker, often used for DDoS attacks, spam distribution, or credential stuffing.
A botnet is a collection of internet-connected devices infected with malware that allows an attacker to control them remotely. Botnets can consist of thousands or millions of compromised computers, IoT devices, servers, and routers.
Botnets are used for distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, mass credential stuffing campaigns, cryptocurrency mining, spam distribution, and data theft. The distributed nature makes them difficult to shut down: taking out one bot doesn’t affect the rest.
Protecting against botnet recruitment requires keeping software updated, using strong and unique passwords (especially on IoT devices), running anti-malware software, and monitoring network traffic for unusual outbound connections.
