A browser or password manager feature that automatically fills in saved usernames and passwords on recognized login pages, speeding up access while reducing typing errors.
Autofill is a convenience feature offered by both web browsers and dedicated password managers. When a user visits a login page, the autofill system recognizes the domain and input fields, then populates saved credentials automatically.
While browser-based autofill is convenient, it lacks the security features of a dedicated password manager, such as encryption, zero-knowledge architecture, and team sharing with access controls. Browser autofill can also be exploited by hidden form fields on malicious pages that silently capture credentials.
A password manager’s autofill is domain-aware and phishing-resistant: it won’t fill credentials on a lookalike domain. For teams, autofill via a shared password manager means members can log into services without ever seeing the actual password, reducing the risk of credential leakage.
